How to install a staircase 

Below is a general step-by-step guide for fitting stairs. However, it must be noted that different types of stairs may require you to take additional measures.

Step 1 – Check the design and materials meet building regulations

When it comes to stairs, safety should be your first priority. No matter what type of stairs you’re fitting, you need to make sure that you follow the relevant building regulations. These dictate everything from minimum headroom and the width and length of a flight of stairs to the rules around handrails and the restrictions around the pitch, rise and going of the stairs. Part of this step may involve getting a structural engineer to assess the load capacity of the walls, for example. 

Step 2 – Check the dimensions

Make sure all the dimensions of your new stairs fit the dimensions of the area where it will be installed. As part of this, you will need to measure the distance from the lower floor to the upper floor and the width of the staircase and check the number of risers. 

Step 3 – Attach the stringers

The next step is to attach the stringers – the vertical support boards that run along each side of the staircase – to the wall. Ensure they are level before securing them with screws.

Step 4 – Fit the risers

Working from the top down, fit the rises between the stringers. You may need to trim them to ensure they’re flush and level.

Step 5 – Install the treads
